Abundance Estimation

Wildlife population survey

I estimate population size and demographic rates for wildlife and fish populations. My work includes:

  • Closed-population capture-recapture, for populations with no births, deaths, or migration during sampling
  • Open-population capture-recapture, for populations that change over the study period
  • Spatially explicit capture-recapture, incorporating animal locations into abundance and density estimates
  • Simple and advanced distance-sampling analyses, including line- and point-transect designs with detection covariates

I’ve applied these methods to species ranging from marine mammals to songbirds, using aerial, boat, and ground-based survey data.

Habitat Modeling

GPS telemetry tracking map

I turn animal location data into maps and insights about resource selection and movement. My work includes:

  • Resource selection functions and Maxent modeling to identify important habitat characteristics
  • Home range estimation from GPS or VHF telemetry data
  • Path and movement estimation, including step-selection and Brownian bridge models
  • Telemetry data processing, cleaning, and quality control, from raw collar downloads to analysis-ready datasets

I work in R to translate models into GIS layers containing maps of critical or high-value habitat.

Inferential Statistics

Statistical chart and graph analysis

I apply the full range of classical and modern statistical methods to ecological and biological data, including:

  • Regression and analysis of variance
  • Bootstrapping, simulation, randomization, and Monte Carlo methods
  • Bayesian analyses of all types, from simple conjugate models to full MCMC
  • Survival analysis for wildlife using proportional hazards models, including the counting-process formulation of the Cox model
  • Information graphics that communicate results clearly to technical and non-technical audiences alike

I aim to match the method to the question, not the other way around, and I’m comfortable explaining assumptions and trade-offs in plain language.

Database Services

Database and data pipeline design

Data are at the heart of every analysis. I design and build systems so your data stay organized, accessible, and useful long after a study ends, including:

  • Bespoke data systems (databases and interfaces) designed around client needs
  • Integration of Excel, Access, raw sensor feeds, and other inputs into a single reliable system
  • Automated QA/QC procedures that catch errors as data come in, not after
  • Local and cloud PostgreSQL, with or without PostGIS for spatial data
  • R, API, Excel, and dashboard interfaces so your team can access data the way it works best for them

Science Services

Scientist reviewing manuscript

Beyond analysis, I offer a range of scientific services and advice, including:

  • Professional reviews of reports, analyses, and published papers, from a quick high-level read to an in-depth replication of results
  • Workshop instruction on ecological analysis methods, in person or remote
  • Manuscript preparation and editing for peer-reviewed publication
  • Scientific advisory board membership, bringing statistical rigor to project design and oversight

I serve as an Associate Editor for the Wildlife Society Bulletin and have peer-reviewed dozens of ecology and biology papers.

Rates & Billing

I bill hourly, with a written estimate provided before work begins. Larger projects can be structured as a fixed-price scope or a not-to-exceed budget. I invoice monthly for hourly work, and I don’t require a retainer to start a small project. Contact me for a quote.
